My Personal Curriculum: The Start of Something New
I have always been a curious person. I have a new interest every few days, something that I would like to know more about. Do I always make time for these little learning excursions? No. But then I came upon a video on ‘personal curriculums.’ Now, this isn’t a new idea. I’ve seen it on various youtube channels of people I’ve followed throughout the years. But something about this video hit me different or maybe it was just at the right time. The channel is MindBodyMel. I would suggest you check her out if you’re interested in this idea. She’s also working on writing a book and has content around dedication and reading. I’ve been enjoying going through her videos. But back to this personal curriculum thing. Mel has about 3-4 topics or themes she works on in a month. She’s done things around space and different heritage months. There are three things she usually includes in her studies. She has something to read, watch, and do. Mel also separates her themes into continuous and monthly. Her writing is a staple and is included every month. There are about 3-4 different things she tries to accomplish within each category in the month.
This is something that just hit right for me and inspired my own personal curriculum to satisfy that need to learn and experience more. . . while also using my journal in a new and fun way. My monthly journal has been, largely, unused this year as I had no desire to keep up with all the layouts from previous years. Her video made it simple and fun again and got me to review what I was wanting to keep track of and remember. I started out back in August to see what I might want to include. Writing and getting back on my weight loss journey are priorities. I also included a short, fun one for this trial. You can see in the photo below. Was it a total success? No. But it did make me eager to try again. At the time I was in rehearsals for a musical, which took up a good portion of my days.
So, I gave it another try in September. Which also was not the best time because I was in final run-throughs and then performances for the show. But I wrote it down anyhow and gave it my best shot. I still included the writing but not the health category as I was doing quite a bit of movement on stage and I was just doing my best to make time for eating semi-regularly and as well as I could. Side note: Those last two weeks I ended up losing 10 pounds! I also included a section for Mabon and Practical Magic. I love celebrating all of the holidays in my spirituality and the sequel to the 1998 movie was coming out so they went hand in hand. The movie was so great! The last thing I added was a small section on Cher. She fascinates me. She always has and I’d like to learn more about her and experience more of her catalogue. I have some catching up to do. As you can see, September did not go well. It is the 29th right now but I’m confident in that statement lol! Nothing else is getting done. Maybe some reading to get a head start on October because a few of these have gotten pushed.
Oh, October! It’s the time things finally start cooling down in the Pheonix area of Arizona. We wait all summer for it. The truly wonderful thing is that we’ve gotten lovely cold rain these past few days. It just makes all my witchy senses tingle in antici….pation. (RIP Mr Curry) Now, you may see my October curriculum and think why is she giving herself more? Well, it’s because I have a lot of my time freed up now that the show is over. Some things I put down, like Cher, are things I’m just curious about and would like to dig a little deeper. The few continuous ones are for my health and well-being alongside my writing and reading goals. There’s even one for decluttering in preparation for moving more onto the road. A lot of the things I study go right into my business and personal spirituality and energy healing practices.
In addition to my curriculum, I also have books that I’d like to read, always more than I could possibly complete in a month, and movies/music that I’d like to experience. Finally, I also give time to my quarterly study goals. I have three areas that I choose a book to move slowly through for three months. I deep dive into the content and any practices/exercises that are included. The three areas are Goddess, Energy Healing, and Witchcraft. My current studies are The Priestess Path, Chakras, and Tarot Healer. I’m really working on reading through more of my physical books, both fiction and non-fiction.
I like the setup and the no-pressure feel of it. It’s a way for me to streamline my shiny object syndrome. I feel like its possible to follow through on and for me that is a big plus. My follow through is not always great. I’ve gotten better over the years but there is room for improvement. All I know is that I am creating the story I want to live. More reflection, more learning, more creativity, more travel. A vibrant, healthy life.
Thank you for joining me. Are you interested in personal curriculums? Do you already do a version of this? I’d love to hear your ideas and experiences in the comments.
